When I first started researching Enagic USA, I was skeptical about all the claims made about their “kangen water”. As with most all MLM companies, my research brought up a lot of negativity surrounding both Enagic and their products. They introduce themselves as a leader in the water purification and wellness industry, but who are they really? Let’s take a close look…
Enagic – A Brief History…
The company itself has been around since 1974, which is quite a long time in terms of network marketing. The company started in, and is still headquartered in Tokyo, but today they have offices in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Honolulu, Canada, Germany, and Mexico. Recently in 2006 Enagic USA was enrolled as an official member of the DSA. With offices worldwide, a 35+ year history and a company that is now a member of the DSA it looks so far like Enagic is obviously no fly by night operation.
It would be incorrect to say Enagic is in the water purification business. What makes their units unique is how they ionize and change the pH level of the water. The term “Kangen Water” was coined to describe the uniquely altered water that is produced by their technology.
So what is the big deal with “Kangen Water”?
Generally speaking most of our bodies are acidic due to diets primarily consisting of processed foods. It is a widely known and heavily studied fact that an acidic ph level is not healthy. The old school way to balance out your ph level would have you eating a healthy serving of fresh greens with every meal. The concept with Kangen Water is that it has been altered to an alkaline state and by drinking it you can help bring your body back to a balanced ph level.

The Japanese Association of Preventative Medicine for Adult Disease endorses Enagic as their leader in water purification. In addition, “Kangen Water” is the only water product or technology approved for its health benefits by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare, which is comparable to the FDA in the United States. While neither of these endorsements do much for us here in the US, it is highly uncommon for the product of a network marketing company to gain such an endorsement from any government organization of any country.
Enagic has 7 main units, however the company’s iron horse is the Leveluk SD501, which accounts for about 98% of all sales. One of the beauties of Enagic is the simplicity of its product line, they are not out to sell everything to everybody, they are focused on excelling at the one thing they do best.
Thoughts on Enagic the Industry & Competition
The topic of competition is an interesting one to breach because Enagic is sort of a market creator. Of course there is plenty of competition for water purification but Enagic is not really a water purification company. The broad market for Enagic would be the health and wellness industry but how does a water device that claims to turn normal water into healthy water compare with traditional supplements?
Based on my research, Enagic is clearly the market creator for the healthy water concept. Success breeds imitation however, and Enagic has certainly attracted its fair share of competitors. Being the market originator, Enagic is maintaining their status as the premium quality standard. Of course, doing so also means they also carry the premium price tag. They have plenty of competition saying their product does the same thing for less money, but this is nothing new. Every premium priced nutritional supplement must compete against the argument that Wallmart’s brand does just the same thing, which is rarely the case and obviously has not slowed the growth of MLM, an industry dominated by nutritional companies.
Let’s ignore the competition for a moment and taking a look at the marketability of the core product itself. Enagic’s flagship product, the SD501, is a $3,000 investment. This is not chump change, especially in today’s marketplace. There is a good financing plan in place allowing consumers to purchase the product without having to shell out the entire amount, but the bottom line is that this product is a big financial decision for most people.
In many cases people are sold on the unit after seeing a detailed demonstration, in other cases a distributor will lend “Kangen Water” to the individual for a period of days/weeks so that the prospect can “try before you buy” so to speak. In either case I think there is a good deal of salesmanship that needs to take place to convey the importance of the product and justify the investment.
From what I’ve seen, building a business with Enagic would be a bit different than building with most other consumable MLM companies. There is no residual ongoing purchase with Enagic so to keep making money you either have to continue making sales or have a team that is doing so for you, either way building an income requires more ongoing sales activity. This is not a negative per se, simply an observation. I would imagine that your typical Enagic distributor has a bit more sales experience than your average network marketer selling juice or lotion for some part time income.
Enagic Compensation Plan
The thing that struck me first about Enagic is how product driven they are. As I was doing research it was very difficult to find much information on the opportunity, not even having a business presentation on their website. The lack of opportunity “sizzle” is honestly a breath of fresh air. I contend that most MLM companies focus on the opportunity to a fault.
In keeping with the product focus I am also extremely happy at how the compensation plan is not structured to allow “front loading”, a major flaw of most MLM companies selling high dollar products. With Enagic, when a distributor sells a product, it is shipped directly from the company to the consumer. At no point is it encouraged to stock and deliver product, the tell tale sign of “front loading”.
Enagic has designed a unique type of compensation plan where there is no annual renewal, no sign-up fees, no monthly or yearly fees, and no monthly qualifications. This is a great move on their part because most companies have all kinds of fees associated with joining.
I won’t bother going into detail on the comp plan other than to say it is structured very legally. It only pays commission on the movement of product and not on recruiting. The commission from a product sale is divided into eight slices (points) which are paid out to the selling & upline distributors based on rank.
Without a consumable product, there is no residual income. This is just the nature of the beast. Here is the upside: commissions made from each Enagic sale can be worth more than the commissions from a year’s supply of a consumable product in most MLM companies. These commissions are paid daily; essentially when a sale comes in the commission is cut and sent to the various distributors earning any combination of the 8 points. In the end what you have is a very unusual and very product driven compensation plan which passes the legality test with flying colors.
Parting thoughts…
Enagic is without a doubt a very legal and legit network marketing company. Anyone saying it’s a scam is quite simply misinformed, because they pass the scam test with flying colors. The company looks strong everywhere from the leadership, to the product, to the compensation. Enagic is a company with a solid product that can without a doubt compete with its competitors. As always if you looking to join any company, dedicate yourself to it for a whole year, or don’t give it a DAY!

This is the opinion of millions of people around the world. Enagic is growing so fast because KANGEN WATER does do amazing things to help the body rid itself of chronic disease and further toxicity.
great article as i just found out about this company and there is a great buzz. I just want me and my wife to drink more water, the right water for hydration and health concerns. Want to say from the presentations i’ve sen, many people including us were truely uniformed about kangen water.
Thanks for your article I did a lot of research while my friend gave me Kangen water for 2 months. I did find out quickly that “other” ionizer company’s were very scared of Enagic I could not believe the lies I heard when I was calling “other companies for info on there products. I definitely smelled a rat. This only made me want to research further. First being disabled for 20 years I’ve tried many things to get healthy including lots of distilled water…..and I knew I was experiencing something very positive with Kangen water But to hear the nonsense from the other co. was almost laughable. In a nut shell they were saying that “their $2300 product including tax and shipping was as good as Enagic’s sd501. which cost $3998. including shipping, no tax in most states I soon found out that Enagic’s $1280. sunus ionizer was a better product than there $2300. product only $1000. cheaper!! this was SHOCKING, “their” product cost only $300. to produce compared to $425. production cost for the sunus and Enagic makes there product very efficiently NO middlemen, everything designed and built in house NO adds, shipping payed by purchaser, sold direct marketing… so the sunus is marked up 3x a better product compared to “their 8x (almost) markup My conclusion was these other ionizer internet co. and wholesalers were scamming people into buying these cheaply made machines for way to much money and lying about Enagic to deceive people. So I bought the Enagic product and it is awesome.

I’m a Kangen Water drinker. Even though I would never say it’s helped me with any specific health issues I drink more water than I ever have and I don’t have to lug water fromt he grocery store anymore!

It was a real pleasure to read this article. I have been involved with a few different kinds of MLM’s before and it always sounds good in the pitch, but buy the time you get in, you realize that it was started long before you got there and you end up making other people real money while you struggle to make anything close to what you put into. Most of all, I’m glad this one has been tested and found to be LEGAL with nothing hidden.
I bought the machine about 2 years ago. At first, I thought it will help me with my diabetes, acid reflux, etc. People claimed that they were helped, as told in the promotional meeting I attended. To date, I am still diabetic, have high blood pressure and is taking medication for my acid reflux. Has it helped me? I doubt it. In addition, my liver enzymes are slightly elevated. Did not have the proiblem before. My family physician has instructed me to stop drinking the Kangen water. As she said, I did not have to spend $4000 to get good water. Regular water is just as good!My husband who also drink the same water ended up with an obstruction in his urethra that caused him not to pass his urine completely. I think it is also because of all the sediments in the kangen water found after the filtration. He just have a surgical procedure done and is recovering from it. I think it has something to do with the kangen water we are drinking. Note that when I purchased the machine, I was given a $500 gas coupon as an incentive. I am still trying to collect the full amount, after more than 1 year! I feel like we were scammed, like the others.
Rose, that family physician will unintentionally do more harm to you and husband over a period of time than Kangen Water will ever do to your family! You are either flat out misinformed, didn’t do the proper research or are not drinking enough of the water, in addition still eating & drinking the wrong foods and beverages. With the laundry list of health problems you and husband have it is obvious your eating habits are terrible! I’ve helped & impacted over 200 families in the last 15 mths and all are happy users & sharers! Better yet where can I come and get that machine from you to give to some of my prospects that can truly benefit!!! Rose do yourself & family a favor, do your own research on this technology, don’t sleep in your doctors bed!
Rose, it was not a scam. I too signed up during the gas rebate offer. With some research, you will find that the gas rebate company went out of business and Enagic decided to honor the rebates even though it was out of their control that the company went out of business. It was an unfortunate situation but Enagic DID honor their offer and ended up paying for the rebates which was a big loss for them. It did take a little longer to receive those checks but understandably so.. Im sure there were many customers who were eligible.. hope this helps

Nice post on Kangen Water. I began drinking the water last fall and have found it to be beneficial to me. I do not have any major health issues in my life, nor my family. My 92 year old grandfather started drinking it and swears by it. I became a distributor when sharing the water prompted numerous sales of the machines. I was not promoting the technology, I was only asking those I care about to consider their health. In life we have choices. You can choose to purchase a used car wtih limited safety features, or a new car with the highest safety ratings. The only limitations are those you choose to accept.

We have been drinking Kangen Water for over 2 years now…it has changed our life! Were introduced to this awesome health benefiting product when my daughter was diagnosed with MS. i never trust a company that starts bashing the competition and then says, “hey, buy our machine because its better than the product we just got done bashing”. they complain that the additive for the SD501 machine is “not drinkable”…. which is true. DUH!! its an additive that helps make the acidic water more acidic, not the 8.5-9.5pH Kangen Water…. its for the highly acidic water, which dentists and doctors use to sterlize their instruments. it is NOT for drinking – its non-potable water, dummies! LOVE THE KANGEN WATER!! ITS FOR REAL!!

This has helped me to make my decision to switch to the enagic brand and now after being a happy customer for the last 7 months, i am sooooooo glad I have my kangen water!!! my experience with my previous, cheaper ionizer was not really so bad, but I can say my body sure knows the difference in the water!!! I really should’ve known better to buy a cheaper brand, shame on me, my father always said you get what you pay for! And with Enagic’s kangen water, I feel like I get far more than I paid for! I don’t know how anyone would not feel the benefits if they really spent time drinking the water and paying attetnion. After having it for so long, i find that I am repulsed by any water thats NOT kangen! =-O

For the past 5 years, I have been using food to try and keep my pH slightly alkaline. It requires diligence, and results can take days. I have known about Kangen for a few years, but just recently was offered the opportunity to try the water, for free, as long as I wanted. So I did. I drank 1/2 of my body weight, in ounces, every day. My rotator cuff injury which prohibited me from full range of motion in my shoulder was fixed. It still clicks, but I can do a full rotation. My joints have less pain. The tingling in my hands has stopped. My “middle age spread” practically disappeared overnight. This is the stubborn belly fat that has been the bane of my existence when I hit 50. My entire life I had a flat and muscular abdomen. Overnight (yes, literally overnight) I dropped 4 lbs and 4% body fat. It has stayed gone, and the numbers continue on a slow steady decline. The super hydrating effect has naturally plumped up my wrinkles, and the puffiness is gone from under my eyes. I have always been a huge water drinker. I have drank between 80 and 100 oz. of water daily. Only difference I made in my entire program was to switch to Kangen. I had no intention of getting into the MLM as a business. I only wanted to experience vibrant health for myself. I did give the water away to as many people who wanted it. The ones who do the program as outlined, drinking 1/2 their body weight in ounces daily, have experienced positive results. It does not work if you don’t drink it. Two people have already purchased machines under me, which is amazing since I really don’t care if people buy one or not. I am perfectly happy giving water away so that people can experience health benefits. Some people are miserable and content being sick and tired. Some people don’t want to drink water. Some people are addicted to soda and cannot give it up. It is the only thing which is restricted because of the huge acidifying effect. Continuing to drink soda while drinking Kangen is like peeing on a forest fire. Don’t bother with it if you are soda addicted. There are some things I am not willing to sacrifice, and that is my health. Maybe the other machines do work. I will never know. I purchased a Kangen because it has been around the longest and has the most documented benefits, courtesy of Dr. Shinya. Have you seen his videos of colons before and after Kangen? Amazing! Death begins in the colon. I trust a product made in Japan so much more than China or Korea. What good is a lifetime guarantee if you cannot get the company to make good on it? Very happy with my Kangen. I test my pH daily to make sure I stay in the zone. Kangen is my answer to Obamacare!

I bought a Kangen machine Leveluk SD 501 for $4300 thinking it filtered out all the chemicals in the water. I was told it did. Their website expounds on the benefits of filtering out all the chemicals, and the negative effects of all these chemicals in the water. HOWEVER, THIS IS VERY MISLEADING. I found out two years later that my machine did not filter out all these chemicals, only lead and chlorine.
I was upset about this and wrote the president of Enagic a letter. I got no response whatsoever. When I decided to take the matter to court, they contacted me, but were unsympathetic. There website says they listen to their customers. They do not.
I lost my case because Enagic found on ONE of their company pamphlets in very small writing some info that the filter took care of only chlorine and lead. There was one very tiny mention of this. All the other info indicated I was getting the purest water available. To me this is out-and-out fraud. No one told me this when I bought the machine. They did tell me this was the “best and purest water in the world.” Yes, they did.
I asked the judge why he thought Enagic put this info about filtering out all the chemicals in water, the virtues of that, when in fact the expensive machine I bought did not do that. He said, “Because they want your money.” His exact words. Still he decided against me.
This company clearly lacks integrity. Avoid them.
I recently met the founder of Enagic and his wife. These are two people who are not only hard working and dedicated to helping people become more healty but are also genuinely doing their part to make the world a better place. He doesnt speak english, he had his interpereter speaking on his behalf and I can tell by the look in his eyes how urgently he wants to put his machines in every persons home. Of course that should be obvious, right? He wants to make million of dollars right? I don’t think so. He would rather make millions of healthy people than money, it’s simply not his driving factor. The simple fact of the matter is that the kangen water works for me, I use it. I have nothing bad to say about it and I dont have anything bad to say about the other companies trying to emulate enagic either, they just want to feed their familes. No one reading this is stupid, you have all been around the block. Dont rely on negative claims to make your decision if you are considering an ionizer or water device, dont rely on cost or finding the best deal. The bottom line is you get what you pay for and there is simply no reason to be cheap when it comes to you or your familys health.
P.S. Stop watching tv and go outside. :]
After what this water machine did to my wife and the whole family I can shout to the whole world about the legitimacy and effectiveness of this product.

I’m with Ed Henderson. I too use the SD-501 for 3yrs. and just found out this year(2011) the filter only removes lead and chlorine and just spoke(2min. b4 this writing) with “technician” at Enagic NYC re ; the filter, and verified it only removes lead & chlorine and we can buy a pre-filter that removes only fluoride. For $3000+ this is not good enough! Personally, I’m really pissed right now and do feel scammed and all of us “kangen” h2o drinkers should be too. $120 for a replacement filter that does no more than a basic Brita filter! Let’s be real here, we bought this machine because of an effective sales pitch but mainly because we want to drink clean, healthy h2o. We all R aware of the toxic state of our tap waters with presence of viruses, bacteria like cryptosporidium & e.coli, chemicals like fluoride, heavy metals, medications etc. So does high alkalinity neutralize any of these toxins?! Nothing I’ve researched so far definitively shows it does. For all Enagic claims over other brands it falls short. Competitor Tyent brand, for example, has DUAL filtration & takes out so much more for $1000-2000 less dependant on model. And as for all the improved health claims by some users, they must be doing much more to attribute the claim than just the addition of “kangen” water. Arthritis in my knee’s gotten WORSE since I’ve been drinking Kangen and my diet is quite good(mostly organic alkaline foods and exercise though there’s room for improvement). For those who choose to ignore these facts because you PROFIT from the sales of the units all I can say is: Hey we live in a capitalist system(albeit a failing one) so TRUTH too often takes a back seat to sales, marketing , advertising and bottom line profit. In my case, Almost $5K in the hole & I’m searching for a water purifying source that’s REALLY effective that will produce clean, healthy h2o.

Reading the comments so far and going on my own experience,I have this to say:
Unlike the earlier reader I have had the absolute seemingly permanent cure for my arthritis.
But was it the product driven entity of the Kangen Machine that did it…or was it my diligent use of that particular machine enable me to ‘alkalize’ myself.
I think that in our common culture we seek remedies in brands.
The gentleman whose arthritis got worse? What else was he doing?
Was he relying on drinking the water to mitigate the effects of a still uncorrected lifesyle?
The question is not whether or not carefully engineered water can drastically improve our heath.
Reverse Osmosis has completely lost the scientific battle and everyone knows that bottled water has to go, the question is what kind of machine do you get.
I am disappointed that I bought a machine that only filters out lead and chlorine.
I wish I had done more research first, I probably would have saved some money and got a better machine.
I did feel very pressurized by the Enagic contact.
I also felt that having had so much free water that I was obligated to buy.
I do not like these sales tactics and they are particularly iineffective in a place like Key West.
That said however, I am very glad I got onboard with alkalized/ionized water.
There is no doubt in my mind that we can eliminate most health problems by combatting acidocis.
The question is what kind of machine do you decide on.
That is what we should be discussing here.

I had gout for 8 years and was taking 9 pills per day. I started drinking Kangen water in August 2011 and as of today, Dec 23,2011 I have droped 40 pounds, I am off my meds and my uric acid levels are normal. All I gave up is drinking the pop.
I got into this business not for selling machines although the commission helps. I got into it for the stories and the health of it. I pass the water around to everyone I know that is sick and they are having amazing results with it. it is not a cure for anything. The body is the cure. Have your waater tested and get the pre filters that you need. Let the machine do what is does. Alkalize the water,micro cluster and add oxygen. Your body may get worst before it gets better it is called the herxheimer effect.(sp) It does not mean that it is a bad thing it just means that the water is flushing out the toxins and free radicals in your body. Detoxing you might say. it does not mean to stop drinking it it means continue with the program as long as you need to. You will see results too.
They have a refund policy of three days that you should have signed when you purchased your machine. I believe they have a restocking charge as well.
